YEARS PERFORMING WITH H&H
FAVORITE PIECE TO PERFORM AND WHY
Samuel Barber’s Dover Beach. I first performed the work with the Borromeo String Quartet in Jordan Hall as a recipient of their Guest Artist Award while in grad school at NEC. It holds a special place in my heart for its emotional beauty, the poignancy of the poetry and Barber’s exquisite setting.
FAVORITE PLACE IN BOSTON
Fresh vegetables from my garden.
FAVORITE TV SHOW
Leaves of Grass
BEST MUSICAL MEMORY
Singing solos at King’s College, Cambridge with the Princeton Singers as a teenager.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT PURCELL’S MUSIC?
Purcell's extraordinarily colorful writing captures the essence of the English language in a way few composers have done, either since or before his time. I have also always been particularly dazzled by his virtuosic writing for the bass voice which was at least in part due to the fact that he was composing for a basso profundo by the name of John Gostling, a singer with a two octave range and in possession of one of the finest instruments of his day.
WHAT PAST MUSICIAN WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO HAVE MET?
It’s a toss-up between Mozart and Jimi Hendrix
