David Stern, Principal Guest Conductor of the Concerto Köln and Opera de Rouen, conducts virtuoso concertos and orchestral suites by the Bach, Vivaldi, and Telemann. Concertos and orchestral suites were invented in the Baroque, which liked to play off extremes-loud vs soft, high vs low, solo or group of instruments vs the larger orchestra, voices vs instruments, and treble vs bass. Drama was achieved, Baroque composers felt, by setting up these kinds of conflicts in the music, exploiting them, and resolving them.
Bach: Orchestral Suite No. 1 in C Major
Vivaldi:
Concerto for Two Oboes in D Minor
Telemann: Excerpts from Tafelmusik
David Stern, conductor
