MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
The 1768 Symphony No. 49 in F Minor, known as "La passione," begins with the slow movement; the usual fast first movement appears second. In the seven years from 1766 to 1773, a period known by the term Strum und Drang (Storm and Stress), Haydn wrote seven symphonies in minor keys, considered unusual and rare. In 1795 Haydn wrote the "Drumroll" symphony as the middle member of a trio of symphonies (Nos. 102 through 104) for London that were to be his last works in the genre. The work begins, famously, with a lengthy timpani roll that "excited the deepest attention" at the premiere.
