Finnish mezzo-soprano Monica Groop has performed with many of the major opera companies and orchestras of the world including the Bayrische Staatsoper, Amsterdam, Covent Garden, Munich State Opera, Royal Opera in Stockholm, Los Angeles, Cologne, Paris and the New York City Opera, the Glyndebourne and Aix-en-Provence festivals.Orchestra appearances include the Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Cinncinnati Symphony, Dallas Symphony, Houston Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, BBC Symphony, Bavarian Radio Orchestra, Dresden Staatskapelle, Leipzig Gewandhausorchester, NDR Radio Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Vienna Symphonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Accademia di Santa Cecilia under such conductors as Bernard Haitink, Zubin Mehta, Seiji Ozawa, Christoph Eschenbach, Herbert Blomstedt, Gary Bertini, Marek Janowski, Armin Jordan, Neeme Järvi, Myung Whun Chung, Franz Welser-Möst, Kent Nagano and Esa-Pekka Salonen.An accomplished recitalist, Monica Groop has given solo recitals at New York´s Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall, London´s Wigmore Hall and the Musikverein in Vienna. She appears regularly with pianists András Schiff, Rudolf Jansen and Roger Vignoles.
Recent season’s have included performances of the title role in Britten´s The rape of Lucretia with the Teatro Real in Madrid and the title role of Adriana Mater with the Santa Fe Opera.Concerts have included; Kullervo with the NPS Zaterdag Matinee in Amsterdam,recitals in London (LSO St.Lukes), Dortmund (Kullervo) New York (concert with the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Festival) and Philadelphia (recital), the title role in Saariaho´s Adriana Mater for the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Elijah with the Orquesta Nacional de Espana.
Monica Groop has also taken on concerts in Copenhagen (Kindertotenlieder), Stockholm (Bach´s Mass in b minor), Wigmore hall (recital) and Barcelona (Adriana Mater Songs) as well as a tour to Germany with Deutsche Symphonie Orchester Berlin. She also toured in London, Birmingham and Madrid with the Philharmonia Orchestra for Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder, sang Bach’s St Matthew Passion in Oviedo and The Hague, Schulhoff’s Menschheit with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra in Prague, Berlioz’s Damnation of Faust with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester and Symanowski’s Stabat mater with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the BBC Proms.
A prolific recording artist, Monica Groop has made over sixty recordings. Her operatic recordings include “Linda di Chamounix” with Edita Gruberova,“Don Giovanni” conducted by Sir Georg Solti, “The Marriage of Figaro”, “Cosi fan tutte”, Haydn´s “La fedeltá premiata” and Berlioz “Benvenuto Cellini”.
She records for Sony, Decca, Chandos, Harmonia Mundi, CPO, Accent, Ondine and BISFor many years, Monica Groop has been involved in a project of recording all songs by Edvard Grieg in seven CD volumes for the BIS label which was completed in 2008.She is continuing her collaboration with BIS with Sibelius recordings and Kalevi Aho´s songcycle “The book of Questions”.“Flamme d´amour”, a solo disc on the Finlandia label, features opera arias by French composers. Her solo disc "Arie amorose" was released in the spring 2001 on the Finlandia label featuring famous baroque arias. The same label released her rendering of Bach Alto Cantatas in 1998. The San Fransisco Chronicle noted about this recording that “Groop´s sound is a marvel, a rich, velvety sonority with a wealth of color informing every note. Even more striking though, is the clarity and forthrightness that she brings to Bach ´s music".
