History

While Jordan Hall might lack the size and majesty of Symphony Hall, it more than makes up for it with its intimate layout and pinpoint acoustics. Like Symphony, it is a National Historic Landmark, and draws the praise of elite performers and critics around the country. Modeled after the performance courtyards of the Italian renaissance, its horseshoe shape and unique seating arrangement create an otherworldly sound. It is a venue in which every note of every instrument can be detected, connecting audience and performer in a unique and wonderful way.

Handel and Haydn Society has maintained a consistent presence in Jordan for more than fifty years. The Society’s debut performance there took place on September 29, 1963, featuring works by Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Bach and more, all under the direction of Dr. Edward Gilday, Society Director from 1959–1967. Since that time, the Society has performed 109 concerts at Jordan Hall over the past half-century.
