Sanders Theatre is one of the most decorated performance halls in the country. Completed in 1875, it was originally designed as a lecture hall and Harvard Commencement space, but it soon became clear that it was meant for much more than that. Serving as the primary performance space for the Holden Choirs of Harvard University, its 180 degree seating design allows the audience remarkable proximity to the stage, and acoustically speaking it is nothing short of spectacular.
Handel and Haydn Society has always maintained an excellent relationship with Harvard, and played its first Sanders performance on March 27, 1963. The piece was Brahms’ "A German Requiem", conducted by longtime director, Dr. Edward Gilday, and it served as the beginning of a partnership that lasts to this day. The amiable collegiate setting and personal atmosphere of the theatre perfectly complement the sound of the Handel and Haydn ensemble, allowing every audience member to feel as though they are experiencing their own, personal performance. Sanders Theatre provides one of the most exhilarating and satisfying concert-going experiences in the country today, and the Society is proud to be able to share in its robust history.

We strongly suggest using public transportation in lieu of driving.
Take the Red Line or the #1 bus to Harvard Square. Proceed down Massachusetts Avenue eastward and turn left onto Quincy Street. Sanders Theatre is at the corner of Quincy Street and Cambridge Street.
Plan Ahead: Be sure to leave plenty of travel time when attending a Handel and Haydn concert, especially during the holiday season and winter months.
From the North and South:
Take I-93 to exit 26. Keep left and continue onto Storrow Drive approximately 4 miles to Cambridge/Allston. At the Harvard Square exit, turn right at end of the ramp onto John F. Kennedy Street and continue forward on Massachusetts Avenue. Follow signs toward Cambridge/Kirkland Streets. When the road splits coming up from the underpass, stay to the left. This will bring you to a traffic light with Memorial Hall/Sanders Theatre on your left.
From the West
Take I-90 East (Mass Turnpike) to exit 18 (Cambridge/Allston). Bear right at the end of the exit ramp. Turn left after the lights onto Storrow Drive. Take Cambridge/Allston exit and turn right at the end of the ramp onto JFK Street. Follow the directions from Harvard Square as listed above.
