Next Month ... An Historic Debut
Handel and Haydn Society eagerly anticipates the debut of conductor Sir Roger Norrington on January 12 and 14 at Symphony Hall. One of the world's leading conductors and a pioneer in historically informed performance, Sir Roger will share his expertise and passion with our period-instrument Orchestra as he conducts two grand symphonies by Haydn and a delightful concerto for two pianos by Mozart.

A native of Oxford, England, Sir Roger Norrington broke new ground in the field of early music when he founded the Schütz Choir in 1962 and the renowned London Classical Players in 1978. His explorations of scores, sound, orchestra size, seating, and playing style has had a profound effect on the way 18th and 19th century music is now perceived. Sir Roger serves as Handel and Haydn Society's Artistic Advisor, joining Principal Conductor Grant Llewellyn and Conductor Laureate Christopher Hogwood to bring audiences fresh and exciting interpretations of the Baroque and Classical repertoire.

Read an interview with Sir Roger in which he discusses his arrival at Handel and Haydn, historically informed performance, vibrato, and the music he will conduct this season.

New Messiah Cookie Bake-Off Winner Selected
Handel and Haydn violist and 2005 Messiah Cookie Bake-Off winner Laura Jeppesen handed over the title to the 2006 winner, soprano Janice Giampa, backstage during intermission of the December 3 performance of Handel's Messiah. In this sweet and creative contest, Handel and Haydn Society Orchestra and Chorus members bake cookies with names based on Handel's Messiah. All musicians vote, and the winner is announced during intermission of the last performance of the season's Messiah. A prize of $100 was award to Ms. Giampa for her winning cookie "Good Things." Other entries included "May Every Pistachio Be Exalted," "Chocolate Shall Cover The Earth," and "COM-quat Ye, My Pecan."

Thank you, MCC
One of the single largest contributions to the Handel and Haydn Society each year is made by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, which provides a critical source of operating support. The MCC 's mission is to "promote excellence, access, education, and diversity in the arts, humanities, and interpretive sciences to improve the quality of life for all Massachusetts."

The MCC has lauded Handel and Haydn for its "vitality" and its willingness to "take risks and explore new musical horizons." The Society is deeply grateful for this recognition, for the MCC 's extraordinary financial support, and for the invaluable role it plays in strengthening the cultural life of our state.

Upcoming Performances in 2007
