Young Singers in the Spotlight
In February, the Handel and Haydn Society Educational Outreach Program presented two Participatory Youth Concerts. Students from seven different Boston area high schools came together to perform alongside the professional musicians of the Handel and Haydn Orchestra and Chorus. These concerts provide students with a sense of achievement and musical ownership in ways that traditional youth concerts cannot. Handel and Haydn Associate Conductor John Finney conducted a program that included the Sonata in D Major for Two Trumpets by Franceschini and Schubert's Mass in G Minor. The performances took place at Brockton High School and Boston Latin School with choirs from Brockton, Classical, English, and Lynn High Schools as well as Boston Latin, Boston Arts Academy, and the Roland Hayes Music Division.

Bienvenue, Marie-Hélène!

The Handel and Haydn Society is pleased to announce the arrival of its new Executive Director and CEO, Marie-Hélène Bernard. After a five-month international search of candidates from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, Ms. Bernard, a native of Québec, "was the unanimous choice of the Society's Board," states Todd Estabrook, chair of the Handel and Haydn Society Board of Governors.

Ms. Bernard is the former Orchestra Manager of the Cleveland Orchestra and, most recently, President and CEO of the Canton (Ohio) Symphony. She is also a viola da gamba player who has a great passion for the music the Society performs. "I am thrilled and honored to join the Handel and Haydn Society, one of North America's most sought-after and respected period-instrument ensembles," says Ms. Bernard. "With its new artistic partnerships and initiatives in place and a longstanding tradition of excellence, I look forward to leading the Society and enhancing its national and international reputation." Succeeding Mary Deissler, Handel and Haydn Society's Executive Director and CEO of 25 years, Ms. Bernard joined the Society on April 2, 2007.

Ms. Bernard will be at the subscription renewal table during intermission of Handel and Haydn Society's performances of Haydn's The Seasons on April 13 and 15 at Symphony Hall. Plan on stopping by to say "hello."
