The Handel and Haydn Society Chorus, a fully
professional group of highly versatile singers, is regarded
as one of the finest vocal ensembles in North America. Begun
as a volunteer singing society, by the mid-19th century the
Society Chorus had swelled to a high of 400 members, performing
operatic music and a broad choral repertory. Today the roster
stands at 60 and features some of the finest singers in New
England. The Boston Globe has called the Handel and Haydn
Society Chorus "one of the glories of Boston's musical
life."
Handel and Haydn Associate Conductor and
Chorusmaster John Finney has remarked that "having a
beautiful sound does not in and of itself make the Chorus
great. It is what it can do with that sound that sets it apart
from the average chorus. Much of the choral music we perform
could be described with a single word: virtuosic.”
